The Importance of Friendsgiving

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that takes place each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (following Black Friday and Cyber Monday). It was created in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y and the nonprofit leadership organization UN Foundation as a counterbalance to consumer-focused holidays. Inspire people who might not normally donate.

Giving Tuesday happens after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when consumer spending is at its peak.

For many organizations, year-end giving can make up 20–30% of annual donations, and Giving Tuesday is a big piece of that. It Raises Awareness, Not Just MoA lot of Giving Tuesday’s impact comes from. Even people who can’t give money often participate by sharing, volunteering, or advocating. Matching-gift challenges, School, church, and corporate participation. This builds community resilience and pride. Giving Tuesday makes giving visible and celebrated, turning generosity into a normal social behavior, build a culture where giving is expected. In addition to that motivate companies to match gifts or invest in CSR efforts. It also reframes the narrative of the holiday season from pure consumption to meaningful contribution.

Giving Tuesday is powerful because it uses collaborative data from thousands of nonprofits to understand what works. Matching gift incentives. Social media-driven micro-campaigns give hope. Greater transparency around impact. More equitable fundraising opportunities. This makes the movement more effective every year. We love this idea.
