Minnesota Soccer Mom Gunned Down By ICE Agent

On January 7, 2026, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renée Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three, on a residential street in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Good was in her SUV when the interaction with ICE agents occurred. A federal agent fired multiple shots into the vehicle, killing her at the scene.

Good was a mother, poet, writer, and wife, born in Colorado and recently living in Minneapolis with her partner. Her family and neighbors described her as compassionate and peaceful, with no serious criminal record beyond a minor traffic ticket. She had just dropped her child off at school and was driving home when the incident happened. Bystander video and accounts suggest she was in her vehicle and attempted to drive away when confronted by agents, after they ordered her to stop and tried to open her car door. An ICE agent then fired multiple shots, killing her as her vehicle moved.

Federal officials have characterized her actions as a threat to officers, with Homeland Security calling it “domestic terrorism.”

Local officials and many eyewitnesses dispute that narrative, arguing the video evidence does not show an imminent deadly threat and that she was trying to leave the scene. The FBI has taken over the investigation, and Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is no longer involved in collecting evidence. Minneapolis and Minnesota officials — including Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz — have criticized the federal account and called for ICE to leave the city.

The ICE officer who fired the shots has been identified as Jonathan Ross. He is a 10-year veteran assigned to the enforcement and removal operations special response team (ERO SRT).

Conflicting Accounts:

Federal Officials (including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and President Trump)-Claim the shooting was an act of "self-defense," stating that Good "weaponized her vehicle" and attempted to run over the agents in an "act of domestic terrorism". They noted the officer involved had previously been injured in a similar incident where he was dragged by a car in June 2025. Strongly dispute the federal account, with Mayor Frey calling the self-defense narrative "garbage". Witness accounts and analysis of bystander video footage suggest Good was trying to drive away from the agents, not directly toward the officer who fired.

This has led to concerns from state officials about getting a fair and transparent outcome. The shooting led to immediate protests and vigils in Minneapolis. Federal agents used chemical irritants on demonstrators during the clashes.

Legal experts suggest that prosecuting the federal agent in state court could face significant hurdles due to the Supremacy Clause, which often shields federal agents from state prosecution for actions within their official duties.
